Resolution
Images are resized to the client's requirements.
All library images that have originated from film have
been scanned to print to slightly larger than A4 at 300 dpi (dots per inch). If you are
printing the image larger than A4, the original may have to be rescanned for an
additional cost.
Images shot on digital cameras are supplied up to A4 at 300
dpi. If you are printing the image larger than A4, the original may need to be resized
using specialist interpolation software to the required print size.
Image Size
Images for Print
The standard resolution for printing images in publications is
300 dpi, the actual image dimensions are also required to
calculate the final file size.
When ordering images for print we will need to
know the following information
1. The dpi (dots per inch) required (e.g. 300 dpi).
2. The actual size the image will be printed (e.g. A5 or
15cm x 10cm).
3. If the image is to be cropped or used full frame.
Images for Screen Use
When ordering images for website or any other on-screen use, we will need the approximate pixel dimensions, e.g. 800 x 600 pixels.
Image File Formats
TIFF Files
Our images are stored as TIFF files, this is an uncompressed file format.
To aid the process of delivering image files electronically, the TIFF files are compressed to JPEG files. TIFF files can be supplied on CD-ROM if required.
JPEG Files
Jpeg files are compressed files; their files sizes are more manageable for transmitting images electronically with minimal loss of quality.
The visual below gives an approximate guide to image file resolution related to print size.
The following table gives an indication of the reduction in file size when converting from the TIFF format to JPEG.
